Shasta Desbarats
Shasta joined Nugent Law Office in 2025 as a research lawyer. Shasta has many years of experience representing trade unions and employees in the area of human rights, employment, labour, privacy, professional regulation and administrative law. She has represented employees before administrative tribunals including the Alberta Human Rights Commission, Alberta Labour Relations Board, labour arbitration boards and professional regulatory boards, as well as appearing before all levels of court. After being admitted to the Bar in Ontario, Shasta moved to Boston where she volunteered for the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and the Public Defender’s Office as well as practicing for a union side labour law firm with a focus on human rights litigation and labour law. Since moving to Edmonton, Shasta has worked in the area of labour law for private firms as well as the public sector representing and advising Alberta school boards and most recently doing research and policy work for the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
Shasta has a strong commitment to representing employees in the workplace, with a special interest in the area of mental health. She has a love of research and writing and is thrilled to be bringing those skills to Nugent Law Office. Shasta has also worked as an Editor for the Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence and has presented lectures on human rights and labour law at the University of Alberta. She was Co-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association Education Section. Shasta is a member of the Alberta, Ontario and Massachusetts Bar.
Shasta enjoys yoga, art in all its forms including a recent obsession with textile arts including weaving and embroidery, and loves to spend time in the mountains usually taking photographs while trying to keep up with her fellow hikers.
